This week's Centennial Gala was organized to honor the spirit of Nellie's life's work. It was a once-in-a-lifetime event held at the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg featuring the finest in food and entertainment with over one thousand of Winnipeg's finest attending.
Sprinkled throughout and a large part of the evening program were the presentations of the inaugural Nellie Awards (The Nellies), that recognized "twelve Manitoba women who have followed Nellie McClung’s footsteps through their work in social justice, women’s, and human rights." Their life's accomplishments were highlighted through powerful videos.
I remember the moment when I read the email that I had been nominated with over 60 other women -- and was one of the ten short-listed to receive an award. It took me quite a bit to fathom the thought that I was going to be given a "Nellie." I just could not believe it.
What an amazing honor!
January 28, 2016, I came home with a prestigious, beautiful, - "Nellie."
What does that mean?
It means I am blessed. I am blessed with friends who nominated me and gave me glowing references. Thank you!!!!
I was blessed with an amazing evening.
I am blessed with an award which inspires me.
Most of all I am blessed with a new mentor. Through all of this, I needed to go back and research Nellie. What an amazing woman. Here is one description.
"McClung was an author, playwright, orator, activist, suffragette and a great influencer. Her lessons as a leader and an educator continue to teach us today. As one of Canada’s first, and perhaps best-known feminists, Nellie was a woman who became the voice for the voiceless and the defender of the vulnerable, with an innate sense of humour and of justice for all."
Her homely tales of rural Manitoba life came on the scene at precisely the time that the country was looking for a national literature to define its character. Through her humourous, semi-didactic stories, McClung shaped her audiences’ imaginations about the nation’s future.
I could go and on.... I love her!
I am so proud to have a "Nellie."
Never retreat, never explain, never apologize--get the thing done and let them howl. Nellie McClung
