"Don't Stress"

The food was amazing, the conversations insightful — but somehow, at the end of the day, I found myself on the bottom shelf.

Yet, I had promised to call a friend  — so I did — already lying in bed.

As always, we debriefed our lives. Then I asked her my favorite question:
“What has God been saying to you today?”

There was that thoughtful pause. Then she said, almost surprised:
“The minute you asked that, I heard the words: Don’t stress.”

She seemed caught off guard, especially because we had just finished talking about all the stressors of life — all of the challenges, the disappointments, the inevitable chaos of both of our lives.

Then she remembered how during the day she had come across some books and read an amazing devotional. She realized that even though circumstances may be bad — and even when it feels like things may never completely turn around — we don’t have to carry the stress. Because in the end, it’s going to be beautiful.

“But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.”
— Job 23:10

As she spoke about her conversation with God, I felt as though I was hearing the same words meant for me. My own challenges, too, are working their wonders — or at least they will, if I choose to believe that.

“A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials.” — Seneca
